For those of you still sitting on the fence, and deciding if you want to see the blockbuster Avatar while it's still in theaters, then let his quick review be your guide. I'll help you to make a decision on whether or not you want spend your hard earned money. I'll go over the good points, and the bad points, and come up with an easy decision.
The first good thing about the movie is the fantastic special effects. It's no secret that advanced computer generated graphics were used in the making of this magnificent film. The characters are completely lifelike and believable, like no other computer designed characters. It takes zero brain power to be completely convinced that they are completely real.
Good point number two. The scenery of the movie is absolutely breathtaking. The mountains, the trees the real and imaginary plants are a beautiful sight to behold. If like nature, then you'll love this movie simply for it's breathtaking display of the natural world on this imaginary alien planet.
Ok, now some drawbacks. The plot is unoriginal, and completely predictable. Nobody has any doubts how it will end up. If you've ever seen any movie before where a group of underdogs had to fight a more powerful yet evil enemy, then you know exactly how this is going to turn out. In this regard, it's more like a movie made from a comic book than anything else.
The second major negative is that this movie can easily be seen as condescending. The aliens only survive against the evil invading humans due to the help of another human. And since the aliens are clearly metaphorical representations of Native Americans, it makes it seem like the director feels that the Native Americans can only survive with the help of a white guy.
The bottom line, in my opinion, is that the magnificent special effects far out shine the drawbacks of the dealing plot and the seeming condescending attitude. That is why we recommend seeing "Avatar" while it is still in theaters, which hopefully, will be a while. - 40723
