The Basic Of Surround Sound

By John Sparco

Surround sound is an effect that makes you feel that the sound is coming from multiple directions. Surround sound is becoming more and more popular that movie houses, theaters, home entertainment systems, and gaming systems have adapted the technology for projecting special sound effects.

Movie houses use surround sound because it offers realistic sound effects in the movie. Lately, surround sound has been adapted for use in video games in order to immerse players in a more realistic gaming experience.

Before you try to understand what surround sound is, you first need to know how a surround sound system works. A surround sound system works by using multiple speakers placed in different parts of a room to project sound coming from different parts of the room. Once a track is played for a specific channel, the listener will hear it coming from one direction.

There are many types of surround sound format. They are: DTS, DTS NEO, DTS-ES, DTS-HD, SDDS, True Surround XT, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital HD, Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic II X.

There are also a variety of surround sound speakers that plays a role in providing sound per audio channel. Below is a list of surround sound speakers.

Front Right and Front Left Speakers - These are basically the two main stereo speakers that provides most of the sound. Powerful front speakers usually determine the quality of the audio system.

Center Speaker - This is usually a small-sized speaker similar to those used on the rear channels. This speaker is often placed in between the two front speakers and is mostly set for mid-range frequencies to provide clear TV or Cinema dialogues.

Rear Speakers - These speakers provides the surround sound on a 5.1 channel surround sound setup. They are usually placed right behind the listener.

Subwoofer - This is an essential part of every surround sound system because a subwoofer emits low frequencies which are perfect for deep bass sound effects.

The benefit of having a surround sound system is that the sound has a more realistic feel to it. It provides a new dimension in audio experience. - 40723
